MVME5500 Single-Board Computer Technical Overview

The MVME5500 is a single-board computer built around the PowerPC MPC7455 processor and Marvell GT-64260B host bridge, integrating a dual PCI interface and memory controller. Its on-board features include:

1.Two PMC slots

2.Two SDRAM banks

3.An expansion connector supporting two additional SDRAM banks

4.8MB boot Flash ROM

5.One 10/100/1000 Ethernet port

6.One 10/100 Ethernet port

7.32MB expansion Flash ROM

8.Two serial ports

9.NVRAM

A real-time clock

The MVME5500 interfaces with VMEbus systems via its P1 and P2 connectors and is equipped with two IEEE 1386.1 PCI mezzanine card (PMC) slots. These 64-bit PMC slots support both front and rear I/O. Additionally, the board is user-configurable via on-board jumpers, offering two I/O modes:

PMC Mode

Backwards compatible with the MVME5100

Enabled by configuring the on-board jumpers

SBC Mode (also called 761 or IPMC Mode)

Utilizes either the IPMC712 I/O PMC with MVME712M transition module, or the IPMC761 I/O PMC with MVME761 transition module

Backwards compatible with the MVME761 transition module and P2 adapter card (excluding PMC I/O routing) used on the MVME5100

Enabled by configuring the on-board jumpers and installing an IPMC761 PMC in PMC slot 1

Secondary Ethernet is routed to the rear

Getting Started

This section outlines the steps required to install and power up the MVME5500, along with guidelines for unpacking and ESD precautions.

Overview of Startup Procedures

Before using the board, complete the necessary preparation steps. Refer to the corresponding sections of this chapter for detailed instructions. Ensure you read the entire chapter—including all Caution and Warning notes—before proceeding.

Unpacking Guidelines

Remove the equipment from the shipping carton.

Verify all items are present by cross-referencing the packing list.

Retain the packing material for future storage or reshipping of the equipment.

Note: If the shipping carton is damaged upon receipt, request the carrier’s agent be present during unpacking and inspection of the equipment.
